Introducing this week’s Deco Haus Queen of the week – the iconic Josephine Baker!
From jaw-dropping ensembles to an endless list of talents, the enchanting Josephine Baker never disappointed under the theatre lights of Carnegie Hall or at the Follies-Bergère in Paris. The 1920’s Missouri born starlet thrived not only in the United States, but claimed her fame at the peak of her career in Europe (where she earned more than any other European performer at that time!). Known for her bold moves in fashion, she paved the way for many deco queens. She even had a pet cheetah named Chiquita, who wore a diamond collar whilst Josephine walked her around town! Josephine wore many exotic, revealing outfits for all to see whilst performing her revolutionary dance routines. The iconic superstar even made humor of her approaches in fashion saying “I wasn’t really naked. I simply didn’t have any clothes on.”
Josephine’s sensual and vivacious style, gave her nicknames such as “Bronze Venus,” “Black Pearl” and “Creole Goddess.” She had such an empowering presence – she is a constant inspiration for our designs at The Deco Haus.
